What Is Rough-Cut Hemlock Lumber?

Rough-cut hemlock has a down-to-earth appeal: it comes straight from the mill with a natural finish, a bit of character, and the sturdy feel people want for real-world projects. It’s a popular pick for barns, sheds, fencing, decking, wharfs, framing, and other jobs where strength and value matter. Around Nova Scotia, hemlock is a great match for the climate, offering dependable performance and a classic look that feels right at home. If you want lumber that’s practical, durable, and full of character, rough-cut hemlock is a great place to start.

Why Hemlock?

Hemlock stands out for how well it holds up over time. Compared to pine, it’s generally stronger, more stable, and better suited to damp coastal conditions, so it’s a trusted choice for beams, framing, decking, wharfs, and more. It is naturally rot-resistant and bug-resistant and has a straighter grain and a clean, attractive look, making it a solid option when appearance matters too.

Size Matters

Ever bought a 2x4 from a big-box store and found it wasn’t quite a full 2x4? You’re not alone. Those boards are often a little smaller than the name suggests. At Chittick, when you order a 2x4, you get a true 2x4. Because our rough-cut lumber comes straight from the mill, there may be slight variation, but it’s much closer to full size than what you’ll typically find at larger retailers. That means a better fit and an easier project from start to finish.
